Cuphead Inkwell Isle Guide — All Three Islands
Quick Answer
Cuphead has three main worlds called Inkwell Isle One, Two, and Three, plus a final area called Inkwell Hell. Inkwell Isle One has five bosses and is the easiest. Inkwell Isle Two also has five bosses and is noticeably harder. Inkwell Isle Three has seven bosses and is the most challenging world in the base game. Completing all three unlocks Inkwell Hell where you face King Dice and the Devil.
What Are the Inkwell Isles?
The Cuphead Inkwell Isles are the four worlds that make up Cuphead’s game map. Each island is a hand-drawn overworld you explore on foot, moving between boss fights, Run and Gun levels, shops, and hidden coin locations. Bosses are locked until you have defeated the required number on that island to unlock the path forward.
The story connects everything together. After Cuphead loses a bet to the Devil at the casino on Inkwell Hell, he and Mugman must travel across the islands collecting soul contracts from the Devil’s debtors the bosses you fight. Every boss you beat brings you one step closer to facing the Devil himself.
Elder Kettle your guardian sends you on your way from a small cottage on Inkwell Isle One. From there the journey expands outward across increasingly difficult and visually distinct worlds.
Inkwell Isle One

Inkwell Isle One is a green countryside world. It is the starting area and the most beginner-friendly part of the game. The art style here feels open and cheerful — rolling hills, forests, and a wide sky. Do not let that fool you though. Even the first island has bosses that will end your run quickly if you are not paying attention.
Bosses on Inkwell Isle One
The Root Pack — Botanic Panic This is your first real boss fight. You face three vegetable enemies one after another — a potato, an onion, and a carrot — in sequence. Each one has a short health bar and simple attack patterns. The carrot is the trickiest of the three because it fires homing vegetables and sonic waves. This fight teaches you the basics of dodging and staying mobile.
Goopy Le Grande — Ruse of an Ooze A blue blob who transforms across multiple phases. He can become giant and crush you by jumping, shrink and roll across the floor, or transform into a tombstone and fire projectiles. Goopy is where most beginners learn that every boss phase changes completely — what worked in phase one will not save you in phase two.
Ribby and Croaks — Clip Joint Calamity The first real difficulty spike on Inkwell Isle One. Two boxing frogs who fight together in phase one, then attack from opposite sides in phase two, then fuse into a slot machine in phase three. The slot machine phase is random — it picks one of three obstacle types each time. This is the fight that first teaches you to adapt on the fly.
Hilda Berg — Threatenin’ Zeppelin A flying level — the first one in the game. You pilot a plane and shoot down Hilda Berg, a woman who transforms into different constellation shapes across the fight. Each constellation has its own attack pattern. This is your introduction to Cuphead’s plane mechanics which return in later boss fights.
Cagney Carnation — Floral Fury A giant flower boss who is the final challenge on Isle One. Cagney is significantly harder than anything else on the island. His seeds home in on you, his vines grow from the floor, and his later phases require you to deal with multiple attack types at the same time. Beating him unlocks your exit from Isle One.
What Else Is on Inkwell Isle One
There is one Run and Gun level called Forest Follies where you run through a forest fighting enemies and collecting coins. There is also one Mausoleum challenge — a parry-based test where you must slap ghosts before they reach a ghost statue in the centre. Completing it earns you a Super Art ability.
Porkrind’s Emporium — the weapon shop — is here. You should visit it early and spend your coins on a new weapon before taking on the harder bosses.
Inkwell Isle Two

Inkwell Isle Two has a warmer, more colourful feel — circus tents, pyramids, sugar kingdoms, and a fairground. The bosses here are noticeably harder than Isle One. They have more phases, more attack variety, and much less forgiving windows for mistakes.
Inkwell Isle Two is a significant bump in difficulty compared to Inkwell Isle One, as Cuphead begins to reveal its true challenge.
Bosses on Inkwell Isle Two
Beppi the Clown — Carnival Kerfuffle A clown who attacks with bumper cars, roller coasters, and eventually a giant penguin army. The first phase is manageable — Smoke Bomb lets you dash through him as he drives his bumper car. The final phase is where the difficulty jumps because Beppi summons penguins that throw baseballs while the roller coaster is also attacking. Spread Shot is recommended for the phases where he stays in one place.
Djimmi the Great — Pyramid Peril A flying level boss — a genie who emerges from a pyramid and attacks from a floating sarcophagus. He summons puppet versions of Cuphead to distract you, fires treasure chests, and in one phase transforms his head into a giant Cuphead face. The visual chaos of this fight is part of the challenge.
Baroness Von Bon Bon — Sugarland Shimmy A candy queen who attacks from a moving candy castle. She summons mini-boss candy characters — a candy corn, a waffle, a jawbreaker, and others — before attacking directly herself. The mini-boss order is random each run which forces you to adapt rather than memorise a fixed pattern.
Wally Warbles — Aviary Action Another flying level. A giant angry bird in a nest who fires feathers, shoots eggs, and in later phases sends his babies to attack you. The final phase where his kids carry him away on a stretcher while throwing garbage at you is one of the more chaotic moments in Isle Two. Lobber shot works well here — it lets you fire from above his main attacks.
Grim Matchstick — Fiery Frolic The hardest boss on Inkwell Isle Two and one of the harder fights in the entire base game. A giant dragon who breathes fire while you jump between floating clouds. The clouds are the platform and the only thing between you and falling off the screen. The final phase is one of the most frustrating in the game, as attacking the boss at the wrong time will cause his attacks to scatter, making them more difficult to dodge. Listen for his sound cues in phase two — they tell you when the fire is coming before you can see it.
What Else Is on Inkwell Isle Two
There are two Run and Gun levels — Funhouse Frazzle and Funfair Fever. There is a second Mausoleum challenge here as well which earns you another Super Art. There are also hidden coins on the overworld map — explore behind buildings and along the edges of the path to find them.
Inkwell Isle Three

The World Three Inkwell Isle Three area of Cuphead is set in a nice beachfront town. The visual theme shifts to a seaside city — lighthouses, docks, a train station, a theatrical stage. It is the most detailed overworld in the game and it contains seven bosses — more than either of the previous islands.
Inkwell Isle Three is the only Isle to have seven bosses. Inkwell Isles One and Two only had five bosses each.
The back half of Cuphead is among the trickiest parts of any game in recent memory.
Bosses on Inkwell Isle Three
Rumor Honeybottoms — Honeycomb Herald A bee queen who fights from a moving platform that scrolls downward. This forces you to jump up and drop down through platforms constantly while shooting. The Lobber shot is the best option for this boss, but the Roundabout shot is valuable for its ability to take down the first phase without having to worry about the position of the bee cop.
Dr. Kahl’s Robot — Junkyard Jive Dr. Kahl’s Robot is arguably the most strenuously difficult encounter in the entire game. This flying boss is an endurance test that forces players to keep track of a plethora of projectiles on the screen. During the first phase, players have to take down three different parts of the robot before being able to damage the heart of the robot. Many players consider this the single hardest boss in Cuphead outside of Inkwell Hell.
Sally Stageplay — Dramatic Fanatic A theatrical actress who fights across multiple stage productions. Each phase looks like a different act of a play — a wedding, a storm, a heavenly finale. The visual storytelling here is some of the best in the game. Sally herself is one of the more manageable bosses on Isle Three which gives you a break between the harder fights.
Werner Werman — Murine Corps A German mouse engineer who attacks from inside a tin can tank. The tank charges at you, fires bottle caps, and in the final phase a cat emerges from nowhere and becomes the primary threat. The cat phase surprises most players on their first run because the enemy changes completely without warning.
Captain Brineybeard — High Seas Hi-Jinx A pirate captain whose ship is a living creature. The ship fires cannonballs and sea creatures at you while Brineybeard himself attacks from above. The tentacle attacks in the later phases require constant movement and good jump timing.
Cala Maria — Ocean Drive A giant mermaid who attacks in a flying level. She summons fish, fires electric eels, and in her most dangerous phase turns your screen to stone using a medusa power that petrifies Cuphead temporarily. The stone petrification can cascade if you do not break free quickly.
Phantom Express — Railroad Wrath The final boss of Inkwell Isle Three and your ticket to Inkwell Hell. A ghost train with four phases — each one featuring a different type of supernatural enemy. The final phase requires you to destroy the locomotive engine before it reaches you. This is a strong endurance test before the final push to King Dice and the Devil.
What Else Is on Inkwell Isle Three
There are two Run and Gun levels and the third and final Mausoleum challenge. There are also a couple of NPCs in World Three which are tied to Cuphead’s secret achievements. Silverworth the fork NPC unlocks Two-Strip Mode if you reach Grade A or higher on all levels. Tully the turtle unlocks Black and White Mode if you complete all six Run and Gun levels without defeating any enemies.
Inkwell Hell

After clearing all three islands, the path to Inkwell Hell opens. This is where King Dice and the Devil wait. Inkwell Hell is not a full overworld like the other islands — it leads directly into the King Dice gauntlet and then the Devil himself.
The Casino and King Dice fight is probably one of the hardest segments of Cuphead, as it is basically a test of endurance. The idea behind this fight is essentially to complete a boss rush all the way to the King Dice boss fight.
Hidden Coins
Every Inkwell Isle has hidden coins on the overworld map. These are separate from coins collected in Run and Gun levels. On Isle One, talk to the NPC Quint who hints that coins are hidden across every island. Look behind buildings, along fence lines, and at the edges of paths. These coins are worth collecting early because they let you buy better weapons before tackling harder bosses.
Tips for Getting Through All Three Islands
Start every new island by visiting Porkrind’s Emporium first if it is available. Upgrading your weapons before the harder bosses makes a real difference.
Complete the Mausoleum challenges as soon as they become available. Each one rewards a Super Art which becomes increasingly valuable as the bosses get harder.
Do not skip Run and Gun levels. They contain coins you need for weapon upgrades and contribute to your overall completion percentage.
On Isle Three specifically fight Rumor Honey bottoms and Sally Stageplay before taking on Dr. Kahl’s Robot. Use the easier bosses to warm up your reflexes before the hardest fights.
Playing the Inkwell Isles on Cuphead APK
If you are playing Cuphead APK on Android, all three Inkwell Isles are fully included every boss, every Run and Gun level, every Mausoleum, and every hidden coin. The overworld exploration and boss progression work exactly the same as on PC and console.
The biggest difference on mobile is boss fight precision. Bosses like Dr. Kahl’s Robot and Grim Matchstick require fast, accurate inputs that are harder on a touchscreen. A Bluetooth controller is strongly recommended before you reach Inkwell Isle Three.
